Important: If you are not familiar with Portfolios, we recommend you review the Portfolios area Overview page. It will provide you with a working knowledge of the Portfolios area.

We are early in the life cycle in the Initiation phase.  Depending on organizational processes, a business challenge may precede the creation of a proposal, or you may be creating the proposal as the first step. If the proposal is approved, it will become a project and move into the Planning phase. The focus at this stage to help you understand how to create proposals and obtain approval to create a project to deliver the solution defined in the business case.

Here are a few practical tips:

  • Portfolios allows you to capture the high-level details for a Proposal. This will include a brief description of the proposal, anticipated dates, key details from the business case, and a timeline of the notes or actions taken during the proposal creation.  These proposal details are intended to provide an executive summary of the proposal; likely, you will also be required to produce formal proposal and business case documents to provide all the required details.
  • While your organization may have customized the proposal approval process stages, your actions will be consistent as you move the proposal from Initiation to Selection to obtain senior management authorization and ultimately as an approved proposal initiating a new project in the Planning phase.
