While not all business challenges will result in the creation of proposals and eventually projects, the capture of all business challenges provides a central point for documenting and managing them.  The focus at this stage is to help you understand how to create and maintain business challenges and associate them with ideas to help identify the best solution to the challenge.

Here are a few practical tips:

• Portfolio IQ has the facility to capture the very early stages of a project, specifically through the identification of a Business Challenge which could evolve through ideas to address the challenge, with some becoming proposals which could eventually become projects.

• While there are no hard and fast rules for when a challenge should be created a business challenge should be created whenever the business unit believes that a current problem or challenge may eventually evolve into a project. 

• Ideas should be generated and associated to a business challenge to brain-storm ways to address the business challenge. 

• And finally, the challenge can be managed as it progresses from definition to collaboration to evaluation using a process flow, so we always know which stage each business challenge is in.
