Overview: Completing the project plan (02:54)

Welcome to the Completing the project plan section. Here are the core actions for completing the project plan in the Projects area:

  1. Validate Key Dates and Deliverables
  2. Define the financial forecast
  3. Create resource requests
  4. Create the project baseline
  5. Advance the project to the next stage and
  6. Create a Microsoft Teams Project Channel for the project.

These are not sequential actions, and you may skip some (or even all) based on your project delivery requirements.

Important: If you are not familiar with Project IQ, we recommend you review the Projects and Work Overview page. It will provide you with a working knowledge of the Projects area.

Once you have completed the development of the project schedule, you also have a few finalization steps in the Planning phase to move the project into the Executing phase. The focus at this stage is to understand how to complete the project plan and move your project into execution.

Here are a few practical tips:

  • With the project schedule complete, it is important to validate that the Key Dates and Deliverables are defined during project startup remain aligned with the project schedule.
  • If you are not able to achieve these target dates and deliverables, you will need to meet with the project sponsor to discuss how to resolve these discrepancies.
  • If your organization is using Projects for financial management, you will need to create the forecast at this time to capture the project’s budget at the end of planning.

  • If your organization is using Resources for resource management, project resource requests should be created to document the requirements for all enterprise resources who should be allocated to the project.

  • Very importantly, a project status update should be created to define the project baseline as approved at the end of planning.
  • If your project type has a defined business process flow, you will likely need to advance the process to the next phase at this time; and
  • If your organization and/or project will be using Microsoft Teams, you should create a new Team and Channel for the project to setup the team collaboration space.
