Introduction to the Strategy Manager role (04:31)

This section applies to anyone who wants a deep understanding of strategy execution and benefits management with a specific focus for individuals, typically strategy manager or executive roles, who are working to ensure all delivery work associated with Portfolios, Programs and Projects are aligned to organizational strategy and corporate objectives in Strategy IQ.

Important: If you are not familiar with Strategy IQ, we recommend you review the Strategy IQ Overview page. It will provide you with a working knowledge of the Strategy IQ area.

Strategy IQ will allow you to prioritize projects and align investments with organizational strategy to optimize outcomes and realize benefits. It focuses on these:

  1. First, it focuses on the organization’s Strategic Themes and then the Strategic Goals which define how the Themes, and ultimately the organizational objectives will be accomplished.

  2. Next, measurable Benefits are defined to measure the achievement of the goals and finally the appropriate portfolios, programs and projects are prioritized and approved to deliver the expected results and benefits realization is tracked to measure benefits delivered.

  3. Finally, Portfolios, programs and/or projects can be associated with Strategic Goals to define how the expected results will be delivered. Alternatively, based on organizational standards, portfolios, programs and or projects can be associated with Benefits to define at a lower level how the expected benefits will be delivered.

A  strategy manager (or an executive) role in Sensei IQ is mainly responsible for:

  • Defining and maintaining strategic themes and strategic goals.

Strategic Themes allow you to align the delivery teams with the organizational mission to ensure that all projects are prioritized based on its contribution and maximizes the investment in approved projects.

Strategic Goals allow you to refine the themes with a focus on defining and tracking how each portfolio, program and project supports the accomplishment of the goal and ultimately the theme.
  • Capturing and measuring expected results as benefits.

Benefits allow you to capture the high-level definition of the expected results, but more importantly you can define expected quantitative values to allow for the measurement for the benefit based on revenue, cost, percentage change or other relevant numeric measure. For benefits that cannot be quantitatively measured, you can specify expected intangible benefits.

As well, you can also define expectations in terms of outputs or outcomes for each benefit. You can also define the time periods when the benefit can be tracked and ultimately measured to ensure benefits realization.
  • Managing the relationships between strategy and execution

Strategy IQ provides an efficient way to set organization strategy by defining benefits and associate them with strategic goals as well as portfolios, programs and projects. Benefits can be tracked against specific metrics to measure and validate the realization of the benefit across all levels in Sensei IQ – projects, programs, and portfolios. Within Strategy IQ, you can easily link back to project, portfolios and programs.
