While your organization likely has a more specific definition of constraints, a constraint is generally defined as a limiting factor that affects the execution of a portfolio or program. Specifically, constraints are events which are outside the control of the team and therefore could have an impact on planning and execution.
It is important to document these constraints as soon as they are identified to ensure everyone is aware of them, and more importantly, why the work was planned to accommodate them.
To document program or portfolio constraints:
Create new constraint
- Ensure you have the appropriate portfolio or program open in Portfolio IQ.
- Click the Constraints tab.
- Click +New Constraint.
- Fill in the Name field.
Important: It is mandatory and it should be clear and concise to help users identify the constraint in screens, reports, and dashboards. - Provide additional details in the remaining fields.
- Click Save and Close.
Update constraints
- Ensure you have the appropriate portfolio or program open in Portfolio IQ.
- Click the Constraints tab.
- Click on the Constraint to be updated from the list.
- Update any field, as required.
- Click Save & Close.
