Important: If you are not familiar with the Projects area, we recommend you review the Projects and Work Overview page. It will provide you with a working knowledge of the Project IQ area.
Prior to creating a new project, we are assuming that the request goes through an Initiation and approval process, either using Portfolio IQ, if your organization has implemented it, or the project has been approved through existing organizational approval processes.
Creating a new project typically occurs in the beginning of the Planning stage. The focus at this stage is defining each approved project and capturing appropriate high-level information to record the stakeholder’s expectations at the time the project was approved.
Here are a few practical tips:
- Projects allows you to ensure that the project is defined by the correct Project Type; and optionally build on existing projects managed in External Tools such as Project Online, Project for the web, Azure Boards or Jira.
- This area also allows you to to capture high-level Summary information based on the stakeholder’s expectations that were the basis of the project being approved.
- We highly recommend capturing all the Key Dates, or project events of interest, that the stakeholders are expecting the project to meet.
- We also recommend capturing the expected Deliverables that the project must produce to satisfy the stakeholder’s expectations. and finally
- We also recommend creating Resource Requests to formally request and confirm the allocation of all enterprise resources to the project; and finally
- If appropriate based on your organization’s project accounting policies, is to record the Project Budget. This will be used for ongoing variance analysis once forecasts and actuals are captured during project execution.
